Fiennes takes on Voldemort

Thursday August 5, 2004

He-who-must-not-be named has a name. Ralph Fiennes, who has played
many a baddie in his time, with appearances including those in
Schindler's List and Red Dragon, is to play the ultimate modern
villain. He has been cast as Voldemort in the latest Harry Potter
film.

Fiennes, whose other roles include the lead in the English Patient and
a foray into romantic comedy with Maid in Manhattan, is to take on J K
Rowling's incarnation of evil. Voldemort, who is Harry Potter's
greatest enemy, was not seen in person in the first three Potter
films. It is in the Mike Newell-directed fourth one (Harry Potter and
the Goblet of Fire) that he makes his dramatic entrance in the flesh.

Other new cast members include Miranda Richardson as a newspaper
gossip columnist, Brendan Gleeson as Mad-Eye Moody and French actress
Clemence Posey, who beat over 3,000 girls for the role of Cho Chang, a
schoolgirl who catches Harry's eye.

The film is set to be released in November 2005.

Consumers can take old computers and other electronics to Office Depot (ODP) stores for free recycling this summer, the retailer and its partner Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) are expected to announce Tuesday.

H-P already offers PC recycling via mail. But it charges about $35 for shipping and processing. Most of its rivals charge as well. That's why the free offer is "fabulous," says Kate Krebs of the non-profit National Recycling Coalition.

The offer includes all brands, not just those made by H-P. From Sunday to Sept. 6, Office Depot will accept computers, monitors and most other peripherals, digital cameras, copiers, fax machines, cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and TVs 27 inches or smaller. Customers can recycle one product per day. A PC and its peripherals count as a single item.

H-P and Office Depot won't say how much their program will cost, or how they're splitting the bill.

The program comes as computer and electronics makers are increasingly pressured to recycle. Most electronics contain lead, mercury or other substances that can be harmful if dumped in landfills. Recycling solves that problem. But it's costly: about $20 per PC.

The high cost has led H-P and its rivals to resist many recycling initiatives, says Mark Murray of Californians Against Waste, an environmental group.

But electronics makers may soon have no choice. California and Maine recently passed laws requiring manufacturers to take some responsibility for recycling. Other states are considering measures. "They see the writing on the wall," says Sheila Davis, a director with the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition.

Dell this month expanded its recycling program. Best Buy, Staples and other retailers also have hosted recycling events. But many environmentalists say electronics firms haven't done enough. Less than 10% of electronics are recycled, Davis says. "We're seeing a very minuscule number of devices," Murray says.

"Clearly, (environmental groups) want us and everyone else to do more," says H-P Vice President Walt Rosenberg. "But we've been really working (on the problem)."

Rosenberg says the Office Depot program could be extended if it is successful.

I am not happy the way the vote went this past Tuesday. I am amazed at how many people figured that the gays had an agenda to get rid of heterosexual marriage and felt it was needful to discriminate. It seems we are all still living in the 50's. Next thing someone will say they are all communists. They will all get black listed. I think it is high time that the government stay out of our PERSONAL lives and deal with the real issues at hand. I am tired of freedoms being taken away one by one and we all stand here and do nothing. It is disgusting the way people are in this country. But hey at least we have the freedom of speech..... for now anyways......

I vote we get rid of the electoral college and the current sitting president. All in one fell swoop. The popular vote should be what one is elected by. That is how the other elections are done. Why not the presidential one??

I want to know where Bin Laden is? Why has be not be hunted down like Sadam was? Why is he not standing before the world court? Why is he not in jail? Did Bush think we were going to forget him?

I also think we need to get the drug enforcement people out of our personal lives too. We waste a lot of money on police trying to crack down on the drug users. I say let them do what they want to their bodies. They get no federal or state assistance and they have to figure out where their meals are coming from. As long as I am not supporting them either in jail or on welfare, I say let them alone. If they rob someone or kill them then they go to jail for that. Not the drug use. There are more people in jail for having a joint on them or in their car. Get them out of jail and back to work. Use the jails for people who NEED to be there.

I also think that prostitution should be legalized. That way all the women and men can get healthcare and proof that they have no diseases and they can pay taxes like the rest of us. Again.. this is something PERSONAL that the government is butting into. I do not care what anyone does in the bedroom. It does not affect me....

Ok.. I guess that is enough of a rant for the day........
